What Makes a Good Police Officer?

The Barrie Police Service is a progressive minded and technologically advanced police service that requires intelligent, hardworking community minded men and women to work in partnership with the community in providing crime prevention and protection.  Not everyone possesses the qualities required for the daily challenges faced in a policing career.

Requirements

Candidates interested in a policing career must meet the minimum requirements of the Police Services Act, and as well possess a Standard First Aid and C.P.R. Level "C" Certificate. 

Are you:

  • A Canadian Citizen or permanent resident of Canada?
  • 18 years of age or older?
  • in good physical condition?
  • a secondary school graduate or have equivalency?
  • a licensed Ontario driver with no more than six demerit points accumulated?
  • of good moral standing within the community?
  • clear of any criminal record or criminal convictions?

Police Constable Selection Process

The Barrie Police Service subscribes to the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) Constable Selection System , and only resumes accompanied by an OACP Certificate of Test Results Certificate will be considered by the Service. 

Interested candidates may contact APPLICANT TESTING SERVICES at 1-800-429-7728 or go online to www.applicanttesting.com for further information regarding the physical and written testing process and schedule.

In order to apply as Police Constable, applicants must send a current resume, cover letter and copies of the Application, Authorization for Release of Information and a copy of their O.A.C.P. Certificate of Results. Send your complete package to the attention of the Barrie Police Service Recruiting Unit, at the address provided below.

After successful completion of testing, candidates will undergo an Essential Competency Interview, background and reference checks, and psychological assessment.  Subject to satisfactory results, candidates may be offered employment conditional to receiving medical clearance.

Additionally, the Barrie Police Service gives preference to candidates who: 

  • have demonstrated continuous learning beyond high school;
  • are committed and involved within the community;
  • can demonstrate basic computer skills.

Civilian Positions

The Barrie Police Service also employs civilian members as:

  • Emergency Communication Operators
  • Data Entry 
  • Information Technology
  • Identification Services
  • Court Services and Court Security
  • Administrative positions

Candidates may be required to undergo written, computer and/or physical testing, depending on the position applied for.
