Barrie Police PROPERTY Unit

  • The Property Unit is responsible for the cataloging and storage of all exhibits and found property collected by the Barrie Police Service.
  • When making an inquiry with the Property Unit, please have your occurrence number available.
  • Members of the public are encouraged to contact the Property Unit prior to attending the office to determine if their property can be released and to discuss what documentation is required in order to retrieve property.
  • You are required to produce photo identification prior to the release of any property being held by the Police Service.

LOST OR FOUND PROPERTY

  • Lost or found property should be reported to police prior to contacting the Property Unit as a police report is required in order to claim any recovered property.
  • Found property is held for 90 days by the Property Unit while the police attempt to locate and notify owners.
  • After the 90 day period has lapsed and no owner has been found, the property will be lawfully disposed of in accordance with the Police Services Act.

Keep an inventory of your possessions.
Maintain a record of all serial and model numbers as well as any other information that will help to identify your property.

Report any loss to the Police!

LOST OR STOLEN WALLET?

Report the following are missing:

  • Driver’s License Health Card
  • Social Insurance Card Passport
  • Birth Certificate Status Card
  • Bank Visa
  • Mastercard American Express
  • Sears Outdoor Gaming Card
  • Airmiles

Keep a record of your card numbers as they are required when reporting your loss.

IF YOU HAVE HAD PROPERTY STOLEN:

  • If you have had a break and enter TRY NOT to touch anything or clean up until the police have been notified.
  • Contact Police. A police report is required in order to claim any recovered or found property.
  • Provide the police with specific descriptions of the stolen property. Where available, provide the police with any serial and/or model numbers of the items.
  • Keep a record of the occurrence number for future reference.

TIPS TO PROTECT YOUR BICYCLE

  • Use a good quality locking device such as a hardened steel “U” shaped lock or a steel chain and padlock.
  • Lock your bicycle to an immovable object which cannot be easily cut or broken. Accessories such as lights and bags, etc. should be detached and taken with you when the bicycle is left unattended.
  • Manufacturers mark most bicycles with a serial number. If yours does not have a serial number, engrave an identifying number on the frame.
  • You may wish to put the same number on the wheels and other components.
  • PERSONAL PROPERTY TAKEN FROM PERSONS IN CUSTODY

  • If at the time of your arrest you have large items of property (i.e. luggage) and you are held in custody your property will be held at the Property Unit for a period of up to 30 days.
  • You are responsible for making arrangements for your property to be picked up.
  • If your property is not picked up within 30 days the Property Unit has authority to dispose of the property.
  • PROPERTY SEIZED BY POLICE OR HELD AS EVIDENCE

    • All property being held by the Barrie Police Service Property Unit that has been seized by the police or held as evidence cannot be released unless authorization from the Investigating Officer is on file.
    • In accordance with the Police Services Act, property that is in the possession of the Police Service that is the subject of court proceedings cannot be released until thirty (30) days after the conclusion of the court proceedings in order to allow for the appeal process.

    FIREARMS

    • Firearms will only be released at a pre-scheduled appointment. Appointments to retrieve firearms can be scheduled through the Property Unit.
    • Firearms that are in possession of the Police Service that are subject to release by way of a court order can only be released when the Property Unit has received:
      • A copy of the court order,
      • Authorization from the Investigating Officer; and the thirty (30) say appeal period has passed.
    • When attending to retrieve your firearm at your scheduled appointment, you will be required to produce proof of registration and all valid firearms licenses and registration certificates.
    • If the firearm being retrieved is a restricted weapon, you will be required to produce an Authorization to Transport (ATT) from a Chief Firearms Officer.
    • You can apply for an ATT by calling 1-800-731-4000. To be eligible for an ATT you must have a valid firearms licence authorizing you to possess restricted firearms.
    • You must have a proper trigger lock and lock box in your possession to transport the weapon in order for the weapon to be released to you

    Definition of a Restricted Firearm:

    According to the Criminal Code, a restricted firearm is:

    • A handgun that is not a prohibited firearm;
    • A semi-automatic, centre-fire firearm with a barrel length less than 470 mm that is not a prohibited firearm;
    • A firearm that can fire after being reduced, by folding, telescoping or otherwise, to an overall length of less than 660 mm; and
    • Any firearm prescribed under the Criminal Code regulations to be restricted (including some long guns).
