In an effort to address the growing problem of off road vehicles operating in the city’s green spaces, parks and roadways, the Barrie Police service has launched an initiative utilizing officers on mountain bikes to patrol these off road areas where motorized vehicles are prohibited, as well as the roadways used as the route to these trails. Under the provisions of the Highway Traffic Act, off road vehicles are not permitted to operate anywhere within the City of Barrie, and all motorized vehicles are specifically prohibited from operating within the parks and undeveloped green spaces in the city. This activity creates a hazard to those that are using these green spaces lawfully and also negatively impacts this natural environment. The problem of people violating these regulations has been increasing significantly and this initiative was created in order to target this issue.
Police will be taking a “zero tolerance” approach in the enforcement of these regulations, and as usual, proclaimed ignorance of the law is no excuse. There are numerous offences and fines associated with the operation of these vehicles as follows:
Drive Off Road Vehicle on a Highway – minimum $500 fine
Operate motor driven vehicle in Public Park – minimum $180 fine
Drive No Insurance – minimum $5000 fine
Drive Off Road Vehicle No permit – minimum $110 fine
Drive Off Road Vehicle fail to wear proper helmet – minimum $110 fine
Drive Off Road Vehicle no driver’s licence – minimum $325 fine
Owner permit child under twelve to drive off road vehicle – minimum $110 fine
The owners of the off road vehicles can and will also be charged for permitting these offences in addition to the operator where applicable.
Barrie Police will be randomly targeting the various areas in the city where this activity is occurring over the next few months. Police are asking if any members of the public have information regarding these offences occurring, they can contact PC Horne of the Traffic Services unit with the details.
