The Barrie Police Service Traffic Unit as part of the Barrie Police Road and Traffic Safety Plan conducted a truck/car inspection blitz that started on Monday September 15th and ended on Wednesday September 17th.
The Barrie Police were assisted by the Ministry of Transportation Enforcement Officers and the Ontario Provincial Police Traffic Enforcement Team.
These inspections were conducted within the City of Barrie.
There were a total of 75 motor vehicles inspected, 30 were taken out of service for safety violations There were 119 Highway Traffic Act offence charges laid for various offences.
Examples of violations include:
One individual was charged with obstructing police after he identified himself as another individual, trying to hide the fact that he was a suspended driver.
Inspection of a modified motor vehicle found it to have no rear brakes and a hole in the floor boards. This motor vehicle had recently received a “passing grade” at safety inspection. The Ministry of Transportation Enforcement Unit will be investigating the garage and mechanic who issued the safety certificate.
Another motor vehicle was stopped after almost losing its cargo of garage doors. The brakes of this vehicle were also defective.
This is the second time this year that a blitz was conducted in Barrie. Once again the failure rate of these inspections was high.
The Barrie Police Traffic Unit recommends that all drivers ensure their motor vehicles are safe for the highway and to have all defects repaired by a qualified mechanic.
